Hard Water in San Jose: What It Does to Your Pipes and Fixtures

If you have ever scrubbed white crust off a San Jose showerhead, you have met our hard water. Much of the South Bay draws groundwater that is rich in calcium and magnesium — great for taste, tough on plumbing.

Inside your pipes, those minerals precipitate out as scale wherever water is heated or pressure changes. Water heaters take the worst of it: a layer of scale on the bottom of a tank acts like insulation, forcing the burner to run longer and hotter. That is the rumbling sound old tanks make, and it can shave years off the unit’s life.

Fixtures suffer too. Scale clogs faucet aerators and showerhead nozzles, jams the moving parts inside toilet fill valves, and stiffens shut-off valves until they seize — which you usually discover at the worst possible moment. Dishwashers and washing machines wear out faster for the same reason.

What actually helps? Three things, in order of impact: flush your water heater once a year to clear sediment; soak aerators and showerheads in white vinegar every few months; and if you are tired of the constant battle, consider a whole-house water softener or conditioner.
