When every drain in the house backs up at once, the problem is in the sewer lateral, the single pipe that carries everything from your house to the city main. It is also the pipe San Jose homeowners know least about, because it is buried in the front yard and, in older neighborhoods, made of clay laid nearly a century ago.
Tree roots cause most of the trouble. They find the joints in clay pipe, grow inside, and net everything that passes. We cut roots out with the right blades, then run a camera so you can see the pipe’s actual condition on screen. From the footage we can tell you plainly whether the line needs cleaning on a schedule, a spot repair, or replacement.

Questions we get asked
Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?+
The usual split is that you own the lateral (the pipe running from your house out to the main under the street) and the city owns the main itself. That means most of what goes wrong is on your side of the line, because the lateral is the older, smaller, root-vulnerable part. Exactly where responsibility changes hands can vary, and if a camera shows the problem is out at the connection rather than under your lawn, that is worth establishing before anybody starts digging. We would rather find that out with a camera than have you pay for work on a pipe that was never yours to fix.
What does a sewer camera inspection show?+
Four things that matter, none of which you can guess from the top of a cleanout. What the pipe is made of, which tells you a great deal about its remaining life. Where the roots are getting in and whether it is one joint or twenty. Whether the line still holds its fall or has developed a belly that collects water and catches solids. And whether anything has cracked, offset or dropped out of line. Those are completely different problems with completely different price tags, and the reason we would rather you watched the screen with us is that a repair recommendation is a lot easier to trust when you have seen the inside of your own pipe.
What is trenchless sewer replacement?+
It means replacing the lateral along the path of the old one, working from two small access pits instead of digging a trench the whole length of the run. Depending on the line, a new pipe gets pulled through while the old one is split outward, or a liner is cured in place inside the existing pipe. The saving is not usually in the pipe work itself, which can cost more than open trenching. It is in everything you do not have to rebuild afterward: the driveway, the walkway, the mature planting. It is also not right for every line: a collapsed section or a bad belly still has to be dug and reset, and we camera it first so we can tell you which one you have.
